“I’m not sending you to the couch. And the reason you sent yourself to the couch is because you are sometimes incredibly stupid and seem to think that I’m more angry than I actually am at any given moment,” Clint corrected.

Balder seemed to still be focused on Kate’s joke, not quite understanding. “My hawk, you let Kate sleep on the couch when you were not angry with her?”

Kate bit back laughter, careful when drinking so that she wouldn’t choke.

“No, Kate insisted on sleeping on the couch when she was mad at herself. I moved her to a real bed after she fell asleep,” he corrected again, rolling his eyes at Kate.

“She is a woman of her own mind. She will make a fine head of house in her own family one day.” He smiled.

Kate smiled at first, then sipped her coffee to occupy herself for a moment. She finally stood a moment later. “Well, it was nice talking, but I’ve got to get going. Apollo probably wants out, and his leg…well, you know.”

“Balder, the only person you need to feed when they give you ‘The Look” is Clint, otherwise he’ll whine at you until you do it. Then again, who knows, you might be able to get something out of him by waiting.” She smiled slyly.

“I’m going to ban you two from talking to each other,” Clint mumbled sullenly, leaning back in his seat again. “And animals eat their own food, not our food. You do remember when you made Georgia sick, don’t you?”

He frowned. “I have apologized for that, my hawk. I hope you are not considering making me retire to the couch again.”

Kate mock-gasped. “He sends you to the couch?! I always had to send myself!” She shot a playful look to Clint.

“Apollo is terribly spoiled by him, is what Apollo is,” Clint replied, eyes rolling as he sat up again. “Feeling better now?”

“Yeah, I think so. And look, your boy is almost here with the drinks.” She pointed to Balder, who had a tray of drinks along with a few sweets. “And don’t deny it, you spoil the dog too.”

“Does this mean you’re not going to be all bitchy at me if I drop by again? Because that wasn’t fun.”He before shot a grin at Balder. ”And I totally don’t. Anymore,” Clint insisted.

By the time Balder finally had the drinks, he was pleased to find that Clint and Kate were getting along. A talk was just what they needed, and he hadn’t even needed to be there to keep them civil. “I have returned with our beverages.” Balder made sure to get Clint his tea and Kate her foamy sweet coffee drink (which, to be honest, he’d taken a liking to when she bought him one on days he helped her out.)

“Yeah, I won’t be all bitchy as long as you aren’t being an ass. I think that’s a fair deal, because it was just as unfun for me as it was for you. And you’re lying, I see how Apollo looks at table scraps.” Kate took her drink from Balder when he offered, smiling at him.

“That’s completely his fault,” Clint replied, pointing at Balder, “He spends entire days feeding the animals people food.” He stirred the tea a little as he scooted over to make room for Balder to sit down.

He sat to let Clint sit closer to Kate, wanting to keep the good atmosphere between them. “I only give them what they desire, Kate. It is hard to resist when they give The Look.”

“He doesn’t try, actually. It’s obnoxious. Every time I ask him about things I wind up at a dead end again.” He slouched down onto the table; he’d never been able to sit still for long, to be completely honest. “Can’t hate me, huh? Guess you know how I feel, then,” he said with a small grin. “Sorry about everything recently. It’s been stressful and I don’t tend to react well to it, you know?”

“It’s alright. As long as you don’t hurt him again, I’ll be okay. He’s growing on me, sort of like Apollo, but bigger. Probably just as cuddly, huh?”

“That’s…fairly accurate,” Clint replied. “Except Apollo is a dog. And Balder is definitely not. He’s way more fun. You know.”

“I’m not sure planning is in his nature off the field, to be honest. He almost always forgets to put eggs in the cake batter, and if he remembers those he forgets the flour. I don’t know if that’s just how they do things in Asgard, but they always seem a little spontaneous. I’m sure he tries, though.” Kate sat her cup down, looking down at the table. “I don’t hate you. I can’t hate you, I’ve already said that before. You make me angry sometimes, but when haven’t you? Doesn’t mean I want anything bad to happen to you.”

“Well, in case you haven’t, I’ve still got my influence around the place,” she gave a small smirk, looking up from her coffee at Clint. “Soon you won’t have to miss me. He’s a fast learner, eager too. Practically begs me every day to teach him how to make something new.” Kate wasn’t going to focus on the implications of Clint’s words. There were too many ways to interpret what he’d said, and all of them could get her in trouble.

Clint shrugged slightly, leaning back in his chair as he looked back over at Balder, still in line, although closer to the front. “Yeah, well, it would be more useful if he could be a little more helpful with all the wedding things. Like actually telling me about the whole Asgardian part. And actually helping with planning the reception thing.” He glanced back at Kate, biting his lip a little. “I don’t want you to hate me, you know.”

“…I probably should have told you that I was coming back, then. I was just…I was afraid. You know how I can get sometimes, especially with everything going on. I didn’t want you to get excited and then make you watch me lose a baby, not like that, and not when you already had Diana. I didn’t want you to get her worked up either, because I didn’t want her to think I was punishing her for not being my own by losing it and…I didn’t want you to be angry with me, but I think it’s better that you had somebody else to go home to afterwards than being with me and us not knowing if you’d want me to go after I recovered.”

He just stared at Kate for a bit after she finished speaking. “You do realize,” he finally said, “that none of that made any actual, logical sense, right? Yes, I would have been devastated if I’d let myself get excited for the baby and then you’d lost it. But it hurt worse to realize that there’d been something else in the equation that you hadn’t trusted me enough to let me know about. I was only angry because you sought to keep it from me.” He stopped, resting his chin in his hand. “Guess we’ll never know whether it would’ve working out. Other things made that decision for us. Doesn’t mean I don’t miss having you around.”
